Port au Port East (Berry Head): Located on the west side of "The Gravels", the name given to the isthmus that connects the peninsula to the rest of the mainland, Port au Port East's name was changed to Berry Head in 1952 when it was incorporated.

The name was change was a result of the confusion with the contiguous community of Port au Port West, however, the name Port au Port East still remains in use for purpose of the Canadian census.

According to the 2016 census, the population of Port au Port East was recorded as being 579, a slight decrease of 3.2% from the 598 recorded in 2011.

According to ENL sources, why the name Berry Head was chosen is unknown, however there is a "local landmark" that is referred to as "The Head" and one could assume that berries might have grown there!

When the community was first reported on the Census in 1874 it was listed as Berry Head, "although subsequent censuses referred to it as Port au Port East or simply Port au Port".

It is easy to become confused to which name refers to which town as there appears almost to be an overlap as one community "melds" into the next.
