Norris Point: Located on the Great Northern Peninsula on the west coast in Bonne Bay, according to ENL contributors, Norris Point was visited by Captain James Cook in 1784 and he referred to the piece of land that extends into the bay as "North Point".
It has been suggested that the town that goes by the name of "Norris Point" is simply a corruption of "North Point". When one looks on the map one will see another community on the same small point that goes by the name of Neddys Harbour (not to be confused with Noddy Bay).
(Note: Neddys Harbour is usually written without an apostrophe)
Norris Point (the larger of the two) and Neddys Harbour are often "lumped" together and simply referred to as Norris Point, however, they are two different communities, albeit close in proximity, who had a first settler in common, that of Neddie or Neddy Norris, a white trapper who was reported to live there in the late 1790s.
The story goes that "an English captain at Norris Point in the late 1700s did report encountering an Englishman "dressed as a Red Indian" who attempted to trade salmon with his crew". One believes that Englishman was in fact Norris. Norris Point had a population of 670 in 2016, a decrease of 2.2% from the 685 recorded five years earlier.
