Kippens: Located at the bottom of St. George's Bay near Stephenville, local legend suggests that Kippens is named after George Kippen, an English sea captain, who may have landed his ship there (others say that he did not "land" rather he was shipwrecked at the river located at the western end of the town).
However, some believe that the communities name, in fact, comes from the Acadian pronunciation of the family name "Keeping", referring to an early settler by the name of Keeping who owned and operated a sawmill in the area.
Others though have a different theory: They suggest that the name came from the Old English word, kippens, which refers to a "bundle of hides" (Brooks, 2013).
Kippens has show a fairly large increase in population since the 2011 census when there were 1,615 residents; in 2016 there were 2008, a 10.6% increase.
