GOD BAY:
One of the many bays along the Rose Blanche Lighthouse Scenic Drive which extends from Channel-Port-aux-Basque to Rose Blanche, God Bay was more likely known by its French name "Baie de Vielles".
It should be noted though that God Bay does not show up on the Cook and Lane Charts, nor is it on the present-day maps, but it is included because of its different name.
There is some confusion in the translation as vielle (noun) is a musical instrument, known as a "hurdy-gurdy" and vielle (feminine adjective) translates as "old" or "old woman".
There is only one community located by God Bay, Burnt Islands. This area provided shelter to the fishermen and with was in close proximity to the rich fishing grounds were the reason behind settlement in this area.
In a totally different part of Newfoundland there is a "God Almighty Cove" but that is on the Grace Islands, in Conception Bay.
