Charlottetown: Located within Terra Nova National Park, it is believed that the town was named after Charlottetown, PEI, the "Birthplace of Canada".
The community was first known as Brown's Cove. While some believe it was named after the capital city of PEI, others suggest it was named after the first female settler, Mrs. Charlotte (Hussey) Spracklin.
It was renamed in the late 1800s but who chose Charlottetown was not uncovered by the research team. Sawmilling was the primary source of employment, next to fishing. According to ENL sources, at one point there were as many as five mills operating, "cutting mainly, spruce but also fur, pine and birch for stoves, posts, railway ties, firewood and pulpwood export".
There are two towns in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador that are thought to have been named after Charlottetown, PEI - the other is in Labrador. That town is described elsewhere.
