Port Rexton: The breathtaking view that you see as you enter this community is only one example of the ocean scenery that awaits you on your visit to Port Rexton. Once two communities, Ship Cove and Robin's Hood, in 1910 they became one.

Located on the East Coast of the island at the north end of Robinhood Bay, about 10 minutes east of Trinity and 3 hours north of St. John's, at the time of merger, two possibilities were Port Rexton and Port Randall, both names after early settlers.

No Port Robinhood? Port Rexton was chosen as the first male child born in the new town was a "Rex" as opposed to a Randall (circa 1910).

The population in 2016 was recorded to be 340, a very slight increase of 0.6% from the 338 in 2011.

Port Rexton is now the largest community in the Bight with a population of approximately over 400.

Once situated on Half-Way Hill to serve both Port Rexton and Trinity East, Christ Church was removed in 1950 and was rebuilt in a little valley in Port Rexton. The first church was consecrated on October 10, 1869 and the second was consecrated on March 18, 1951 and still stands today.

Climb to the top of Gun Hill overlooking the harbour where you will find five cannons dating from the French invasion of the 1700's.

Walk around the harbour to Bailey's Head and take the beaten track to Devil's Cove and Skiff Cove or for the adventurous, a 60 minute hike will take you to Skerwink Point.

Along the beaches you can gather driftwood and sea shells, enjoy the excitement of capelin rolling onto the beach, the thrill of humpback whales feeding or just watch the waves as they crash onto the shore.

LOCKSTON PATH PROVINCIAL PARK:

Located on the Bonavista Peninsula, approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) from Port Rexton on Highway Route 236, Lockston Path Provincial Park was first opened to the public in 1966.

Comprising 773 hectares (1,910.12 acres) Lockston Path falls within the Maritime Barrens Ecoregion with fir stands dominating the sheltered areas.

Many species of animals found throughout the province are common here such as moose, beaver, black bear, and mink.

In nearby Bonavista Bay whales and porpoise inhabit the waters that are traditional fishing grounds.

As part of iceberg alley, the waters off the peninsula make for excellent viewing opportunities of these natural wonder.

How it got its name was not uncovered by examining all the usual sources.
