Little Bay East, located in Fortune Bay (Burin Peninsula) is 3 km (1.9 mi) northeast of Bay L''Argent. Again "this" "Little Bay" should not be confused with the "other" Little Bay, even though they are both on the Burin Peninsula, and just to confuse matters it is on the "West" side of the Peninsula where the "other" one is on the "East" side. It is believed that Little Bay East served as a migratory fishing port as far back as the sixteenth century. According to the information presented in the ENL, the actual community was first settled in 1865. The first permanent settlers were James and William Thornhill from Brunette Island and Samuel Good, an "Englishman" who arrived from Harbour Breton as a "stowaway". The inshore cod fishery, as well as to a lesser degree the herring and lobster fisheries, have always been the mainstay of the community. At one point there were over 200 residents in the town, but by 2016, there were only 127 (a 2.3% decrease from the 130 who were recorded as living in the town five years earlier). Little Bay Islands, located in western Notre Dame Bay, is described in Wikipedia as a "Vacant town". For more information on this community, please go to the section on Little Bay Island and Petley''s Island.
