Located at the head of Burin harbour, approximately halfway by road between Burin and Marystown, Lewin's Cove was most likely named after the iconic Canadian bird, the "common loon" that is known to nest in the area.
To your "ear" (and to mine) Loon and Lewin probably sounds pretty similar, so the theory behind its derivation is probably not that far fetched.
Population in 2016 was 544, a small decrease of 2.0% from the 555 of 2011.
