Newfoundland Tourism Region : Eastern
Located on the Eastern side of the Burin Peninsula in Placentia Bay, the connection with the word baine (which translates from French as "bathtub") and "something of a topographical, environmental, or biological nature" may appear at first glance to be far-fetched. However, according to material included in the ENL, it is thought that the name of the community actually does come from the French word and that belief is supported by the notion that area where the town is located is shaped like a bath or a basin. In some of the earlier French maps the town appears as Havre Bane and later Harve du Bain (havre being French for harbour). Baine Harbour, had at last count, only 124 residents, a 9.5% decrease from the 137 recorded in 2011.
