Elliston: Located at the tip of the Bonavista Peninsula, this community was formerly known as Bird Island Cove.
It was renamed to honour Reverend William Ellis, a Methodist missionary, eighty years after his death in 1837.
The population in 2016 was 308, an 8.6% decrease from the 337 enumerated in 2011.
Elliston is known as the "Root Cellar Capital of the World" as most gardens have one or more cellars in the back. From the Newfoundland and Labrador website, root cellars are described as follows:
These traditional food storage systems used mainly for root vegetables like potatoes and carrots - are built right into the ground, mainly into small hills and
banks.
The natural humidity and moisture keeps things cool in the summer and prevents freezing in the winter.
Elliston has more than 130 documented root cellars in the small town and surrounding area. Of those, half are still in working condition and used today.
