Tilt Cove: Located, similarly on another side road off Rte.414, Tilt Cove has been mentioned several times previously, as it is "claim to fame" is that it is the smallest community in the province, with an official population of 5 (recorded in 2016 as well as 2011).

Tilt Cove was the location of one of the first major mines in Newfoundland, in fact, according to information presented in the ENL, not only was Tilt Cove the site of first major mine in the Province, but it was also the site of one of the "world's most productive copper mines".

It was in production from 1864 to 1917, and then again on a "smaller scale" from 1957 to 1967. But, the name "Tilt Cove" does not come from the mining industry, rather the fishing industry.

According to DNLE, the word "tilt" can be a noun as well as a verb. As a noun it refers to "a temporary shelter, covered with canvas, skins, bark or boughs" or "a small single-roomed hut constructed of vertically placed logs, used seasonally by fishermen, furriers and woodsmen".

As a verb, to tilt means "to construct, or use, a shelter or hut for any of the purposes of a tilt". It is written in the ENL that Tilt Cove was given its name as follows:

Tilt Cove has very little in the way of a harbour, and the adjacent coastline is quite steep. During boom periods most homes were built inland, around the shores of Windsor Lake.

Windsor Lake was named for George Windsor, a former schoolteacher from the West Country of England who settled at Tilt Cove in about 1814. Tradition has it that all that could be seen by passing boats was Windsor's fishing shack (or tilt) on the beach and that this is what gave Tilt Cove its name.

Tilt Cove is not the only community whose name is thought to come from the noun or verb "tilt" or "to tilt".

Tilting (aka Tilton Harbor and Tilting Harbour on Fogo Island) and Tilton near Spaniard's Bay are also thought to be related to the practice of building tilts.
