Summerford: Located just off Route 340, along Route 344, the town of Summerford lies "mostly" on New World Island.
The community of Strong's Island, which is also connected to the New World Island, also makes up part of the town.
Its nearest neighbor is Virgin Arm-Carter Cove. According to ENL sources, the town was originally known as Farmer's Arm had a population of 183 in 1901, however its name was changed circa 1911 (with a population of 246) to Summerford to avoid confusion with another "Farmer's Arm" on nearby Twillingate Island (which is now goes by the name of Gillisport).
The area was "frequented by winter crews from older communities on the island, particularly Tizzard's Harbour, building schooners for the Labrador and French Shore fisheries.
During the early part of the 20th century, the population grew to the point that there were over 300 in Summerford, but in the 1950s and 60s the future of the town was solidified by the resettlement of new residents from the Bay of Exploits, but the major factor was the building of "causeways and a system of roads gave the community a much more central location, and it became a "growth centre" for the area.
It remains a fairly large town by Newfoundland standards, with a population of 906 in 2016. From 201, when there were 853 residents, to 2016 the community grew by 6.2%. In the summer the population increases with an influx of tourists to the area.
