Port Anson: Located in the western Notre Dame Bay area, just south of Pilley's Island and to the west of Robert's Arm (and not too far from another settlement with an "odd" name, Nicky's Nose Cove), Port Anson has undergone a number of name changes over time.
Settled in the 1850, originally it was known as Sunday Cove Tickle due to the fact that it was on the southwestern shore of Sunday Cove Island.
It was then known for a time as Newtown, however, in 1903 the name was changed to Port Anson.
According to local tradition relates that a resident, Josiah Ryan, suggested the name "Port Handsome" to the Nomenclature Board.
Some how the name became corrupted to Port Anson. Like many smaller towns, the population is dwindling, in this case quite dramatically.
In 2016 there were only 130 permanent residents, down 21.2% from the 165 that were there in 2011.
