Crow Head: Located on the northwest side of North Twillingate Island, local lore states that it takes its name from the narrow promontory, one assumes that someone decided must look like a crow, that juts out into Mudford Cove.
The census of 2016 resulted in 177 residents being enumerated, a decrease from the 203 that were counted in 2011 (12.8% decrease). Crow Head should not be confused with Corbin, a small community on the Burin Peninsula that was officially resettled in 1981.
According to information from ENL sources, Corbin is named for a "conspicuous headland" known as "Corbin Head", which could mean either "crow head" from cor beau, French for "crow head" or the French word corbel or corbeil that refers to an architectural feature, "referring to the appearance of the land" that it resembles.
Corbin is a small community in which, when settled, consisted of Irish planters and fishing servants who were involved in the inshore cod fishery.
Even though the actual settlement was vacated, there are a dozen or so cabins that remain that are visited seasonally and there has been an issue with the bridge that owners use to enter the community.
The government wants to dismantle the bridge which is in pretty poor shape, but the cabin owners and town folk who left, who want to be able to access the gravestones of their family members, do not want it taken down, so that they will be able to return when they want.
According to a CBC post dated May 224, 2016 entitled "Troubled bridge still over waters: 'Unsafe' link to resettled town remains in place", the "bridge has been the focus of a threatened standoff with a demolition crew, a failed tender call for a replacement, and a 700-page government paper trail spanning years".
Research failed to find out whether or not the government carried through on their demolition plans.
