Comfort Cove: Located on the tip of a 14.5 km (9 mi) peninsula which juts out into the Bay of Exploits about 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Lewisporte, the community is now referred to as Comfort Cove-Newstead, consists of three settlements in three contiguous coves, Comfort Cove, New Harbour (in 1921 it was renamed as Newstead) and Turtle Creek. According to the ENL sources, the area, known as a place where Beothuks resided, was settled in the mid- 1800s by people in outlying islands in Notre Dame Bay, the first setter being John Cull of the Barrd Islands. Comfort Cove-Newstead had a population of 407 as of 2016, down from 451 in 2011 census. Fishing (cod and later lobster and seal) was the main source of income at first, and later agriculture (growing of root vegetables predominantly, and later some fruit) played a major role in the economy. Lumbering has also been of importance and resulted in additional employment opportunities in logging and sawmilling. Who named the cove, Comfort Cove has not been recorded but obviously someone must have found "comfort" living there.
