Torbay: At Portugal Cove on the east side of Conception Bay, one has to "cross" the peninsula, via a road known as Indian Meal Line to reach the next community, that of Torbay.
Located just north of St. John's, Torbay is now part of the
St. John's metropolitan area. Back in the 1500s Torbay was named after Torbay, Devon (England) (tor in Anglo Saxon means "a rocky hill") by English fishermen who used the area as a place to process their fish.
Torbay, Newfoundland, like its counterpart in England, has a wide-open bay looking out to the sea. Irish settlers in the late 18th century, many of whom were farmers, brought their knowledge of agriculture and the farming industry was soon able to supplement the fishery.
Early census reports list it as "Tarr-Bay". The population in 2016 was 7,899 (an increase of 6.8% from 2011 when 7,397 were recorded). Between 1996 and 2016 the population has steadily increased, giving it the reputation as the fastest growing community in Newfoundland.
