St. Mary's: Settled in the 1600s, St. Mary's has always been a centre of the fishing industry more recently as being the location of a seafood processing plant and at one point there was also a fish sauce plant that used the by-products of the of the main plant.

It is unknown how the town got its name, however, the cape on which it is located was listed as Capo de Sancta Maria (by the Portuguese) in maps going back to 1530s.

Around the 1590s, was known as a French fishing station, and the name remained the same after the English settled in 1713 after the Treaty of Utrecht was signed. The port grew steadily until the collapse of the Grand bank fishery in 1894, at which point many businessmen and their families moved to the U.S.A. where they had friends and family.

In 2016 there were 347 residents in 2016 residents (a decrease of 21.0% from the 439 recorded in 2011).
