Pouch Cove: Located on the tip of this NE section of the Avalon Peninsula, 27 km (16.8 mi) north of St. John's, pronounced "pooch" Cove, Pouch Cove is one of the few communities that really would fit into the category of "Unknown Origin".
While the derivation of "pouch" is unknown, as for being a "cove" it is really "a stretch" to call it a "cove" as one typically thinks of "safe haven" when one contemplates the word "cove" and this open stretch of the coast that is exposed to the north-eastedy winds that can be extremely dangerous.
While it has been settled since 1611, it is believed that it was chosen to be an area for settlement as the harbour because it was so dangerous that the Royal Navy would be "dissuaded from searching the shores" (Welch & Payne, 2013).
Rather than pulling up to a dock when the weather tums bad, large boats head southward to St. John's, while small boats are winched up very steep wooden slipways.
In 1987 it was amalgamated with the community of Shoe Cove, and more recently the town has recorded a population of 2,069 in 2016, as it is now basically, like Bauline, a 'bedroom community" for St. John's.
The population has increased by 10.9% from the 1,866 recorded in 2011. The Town's motto is "First to See the Sun" referring its location in relationship to the sunrising.
MARINE DRIVE PROVINCIAL PARK RESERVE:
Located on the Avalon Peninsula, off Pouch Cove Line, a route that connects the towns of Bauline and Pouch Cove, Marine Drive Provincial Park Reserve is the youngest of the park reserves.
It is an essential representative area of the northeastern barrens subregion and consists of 6.17 km2 (2.4 mi) wilderness land.
Being only a 20-minute drive from St. Johns, the area is a favorite as there are places to hike and in the summer time, to swim. One would assume the name was chosen to reflect its closeness to the Atlantic Ocean.
