Portugal Cove South: Portugal Cove South should not be confused Portugal Cove-St. Philip's.
Like Portugal Cove-St Philip's, Portugal Cove South is also located on the Avalon Peninsula, however further to the south, about 10 km (6.2 mi) from Trepassey.
Most likely used by Portuguese fishermen in the 1600s, it provided a good beach for drying their fish before sending it back to Europe for consumption. The "south" part of its name became common so as to distinguish it from the more northerly town by the same name.
It only had 150 residents in 2016, a drop of 6.3% from 2011 (when 160 residents were counted).
Watern or Watern Cove: Located at the south eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula, this community was a former seasonal fishing site in what is now Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
It was believed to have
originally known as "Watering Cove", and according to the Reserve's website, one might see remnants of rock "fish flakes" that were used for drying cod.
