Chapel Arm (aka Chappel Arm): Located in the southeast corner of Trinity Bay, 100km (62 mi) from St. John's, it is most likely the community is not named after a "place of worship".
However, while it may be a bit of a "stretch", one theory is that Chapel Arm is so named because the shape of the headlands, which when viewed from a distance as one enters the Arm, look like a group of spires, as would be found on a church or chapel roof.
According to material presented in the ENL, the historian M.F. Howley, in his writings dated 1901, suggested that the community was named after the English sailor and writer, Lieutenant Edward Chappell, who is known to have visited the island; however, this theory is not agreed upon by all because Chappell never mentioned this particular area in his travel journals.
The town had a population of 457 in 2016, a slight decrease of 2.4% from the count of 2011 (i.e., 468).
