Bay de Verde: It is believed by some that the community of Bay de Verde got its name from the Portuguese, Bay de Verde, which also translates as "Green Bay" but just to complicate matters, there are some that believes that the name comes from French (even though the spelling makes one wonder as in French it would Bay de Verte) as opposed to Portuguese.
Inhabited as early as 1662, Bay de Verde has a long history of being part of the fishing industry, however, due to it relative isolation from communities to the south it has struggled over time.
Incorporated in 1950, the community still survives. The population in 2016 was 392 citizens, a decrease of only 1.5% over the previous 5 years.
Bay de Verde also refers to the stretch of water between the Bay de Verde Peninsula of Conception Bay, where the community of Bay de Verde is located and Baccalieu Island. On the south side of Bay de Verde was the community of Low Point, and while it still is shown on the map it has been resettled over time when the residents chose to move to larger communities.
In 1999, the population was reported to only include 3 families.
