Arnold's Cove: Located just off the TransCanada Highway, on a smaller road, Rte. 26A one comes to Amold's Cove on the Placentia Bay side of the isthmus.
For most of its history, Arnold's Cove was a small fishing community in Placentia Bay, however, everything changed in the 1960s.
One by one 103 buildings, houses, business, etc. were "floated" off the various islands in the bay (e.g., Woody's Island, Tack's Beach) as part of the resettlement program and the cove became a "primary growth centre".
By the early 1970 the population had doubled. One hundred and thirty nine families, consisting of 620 people moved, some happily, some very unhappy about the decision.
There is a "software app" available, entitled "Arnold Cove Resettlement Walk" available from Google Play on the town's website, and as you walk around the community one can see pictures of the houses as they were floated across the bay, and hear the voices of the settlers.
While it is not known who "Arnold" is for sure, most likely the town, back in its early days was named after an early settler.
The most recent census or 2016, shows that there are 949 inhabitants, a decrease of 4.1% from 2011 (when the population was recorded as being 990).
Two kilometres (1.2 mi) further along Cove, there is a small town, Arnold's Cove Station and, just down a bit (15.9 km or 9.9 mi), one comes to the town of Southern Harbour.
