In the case of 'Wreck Cove" a few details were uncovered. At one point, according to the Central Newfoundland Tourism website, it was called Rock Cove (one of many in the province).
It was originally settled by fishermen by the names of Bird, Cox and Sheppard and by 1830s the settlement was home to 47 people.
As in the case of many place names, Wreck Cove was a familiar name (currently there are 10 Wreck Coves listed with the Geographical Names Board of Canada), so in the early 1950s the Post Office changed the name to "Tibbo's Hill" to avoid further confusion.
The name never caught on and when the six communities were incorporated, the post office was closed, and the residents continued to refer to their "home" as "Wreck Cove".
