Newfoundland Tourism Region : Western
Woodville: Originally, Woodville, like Cape Anguille, was a fishing community, however, present day Woodville is actually located inland on the road to Codroy.
Settled in the 1880s, it is believed that Woodville was named after Woody Head, the headland to the southwest and that the original Woodville was located in Woody Head Cove.
While this corner of Newfoundland is not excessively big, it is very scenic and an immensely popular area for tourists. One major "attraction" is the Codroy Valley Provincial Park, located at the mouth of the Grand Codroy River, with its sandy beach known for its abundance of shore birds (see section on Parks).
This interior area, extending into the Central and Northwestern Coastal section, is often referred to as the "Heart of the Valley". The Newfoundland's Grand Banks website has a 20-page article, entitled "History of Codroy Valley" (Janes, 2002) that goes in depth into the settlement of each of the towns in the area.
