SLAMBANG BAY:
It is names like this that makes Newfoundland so "Newfoundland"! Only in Newfoundland, EH? Hamilton (1996) tells the story behind the name of the bay, north of Nain, on the eastern side of Okak Island:
The curious name Slambang was coined by disillusioned schooner captains who had been driven ashore by "williwaws," furious gusts from the high hills of the area, or had found their vessels on their beam ends, their cargoes of saltfish tumbled in a useless heap.
It was also notorious for the destruction of traps and fishing hear by rough water and other hazards.
