Tors Cove: While this community has a rather odd name, earlier it was perhaps even "odder" as it was known as Toad's Cove or Toads Cove.
Some have surmised that rather referring to a "toad" as we know it, it perhaps came from the Old English word "tode" or fox. Tors Cove was settled by English fishermen in 1670s.
Today the population sits at 300 (Census, 2016), a 33.2% decrease since 2011 when there were 449 residents - and given its close proximity to St. John's many of those living there work in the Capital which is only 40 km to the north.
Offshore, on "Great Island" there is the world's largest colony of Atlantic puffins, and tourists are able to go on Puffin Watching tours during certain seasons.
