Tilton: Just inland from Spaniard's Bay is the town of Tilton.
As early as the turn of the 19th century, in the winter, fishermen would move "inland" (from Spaniard's Bay and Bishop's Cove") and build their temporary shelters, known as "tilts" and the area because known as Tilt Town.
Overtime the town's name was shortened to Tilton. According to ENL sources, "From Tilton a path crossed the barrens of the interior to New Harbour, Trinity Bay, but until a road was constructed between Spaniard's Bay and Harbour Grace in the 1840s Tilton was inaccessible during most of the summer months.
A few families settled there when the road was built, and a school had been opened by 1875." The population of Spaniard's Bay in 2016 was 2,653, reflecting a small increase of 1.2% from the 2,622 recorded 5-years earlier.
