Terra Nova National Park is a ragged-shaped oceanside park of sheltered inlets, 400 islands, headlands, ponds, forests and bogs across kilometres (154 square miles) located at the bottom of Bonavista Bay.
Part of what is known as the Atlantic Uplands, its easy accessibility by car a439nd its proximity to St. John's (3-hour drive) make it is a very popular tourist spot. Established in 1957 was the first National Park in Newfoundland and Labrador.
As mentioned earlier in the sections on the history of the discovery of Newfoundland Terra Nova (New Land) was the name that Portuguese explorers gave to the area very early on and that Terra Nova is also the name of Newfoundland in Latin.
There is a town in the park that goes by the same name. Terra Nova is the home to many seasonal residents who access the nearby water ways (i.e., Terra Nova Lake and Terra Nova River) for boating in the summer, hunting in the fall, snowmobiling in the winter, and fishing in the spring.
The town is very small. In 2016 the population was recorded as being 73, down 12.0% from the 83 recorded in 2011.
