Swift Current: Located, at the head of Placentia Bay, this community, not to be confused with Swift Current, Saskatchewan, was known originally Piper's Hole until about 1920.
According to ENL sources, the name Piper's Hole comes from a "ghostly apparition seen in the area, always accompanied by the mournful sound of bagpipes".
Brooks (2013) expanded on the theory by saying that "oral reports maintain that, during the eighteenth century, there was a battle between the French and English at Garden Cove [across the inlet]. Since that battle it is believed that the ghost of a solitary French soldier still haunts the area and sometimes his spirit can be heard playing a plaintive tune on the bagpipe".
It is believed that the name of the community comes from either swift currents of a nearby river, or the ocean currents that result from changes in the tide.
