Straitsview: Located about 2 km (1.24 mi) from L'Anse aux Meadows, the community's name was most likely chosen because of the view of the Strait of Belle Isle visible from the cove's southeastern extremity.
It was formerly known as Spillars Cove Straitsview has been the news fairly recently with reports of gold being found. From the Nov. 8, 2017 The Northern Peninsula comes the following (Roberts, 2017):
An Ontario company has discovered a small sample of gold and other precious metals near Straitsview on the [Great] Northern Peninsula.
And now, White Metal Resources Corp. is searching for more. The company has found precious metals, including gold, in a site dubbed the "Gunners Cove Property," located approximately 20 km [12.4 mi) north of St. Anthony and about 1-2 km [.6 - 1.2 mi] south of Snorri Cabins in Straitsview....
Even though the site is closer to Stairsview, Stares [White Metal Resources Corp. President and CEO] told the Northern Pen they chose to name it the "Gunners Cove Property" because it sounded catchy.
