St. Jones Within and St. Jones Without: Located southeast of Clarenville, Saint John Within was known as "Jones Harbour". Who, why and when the "St." was added is unknown.

St. Jones Without is now an abandoned village. Brooks (2013) suggested that "Without" was added to the second town as it was further "out" in the bay; he also suggests that the two towns were possibly named after two towns in Waterford, Ireland with the same names.

St. Jones Within vs St. Jones Without: From the SWAHS Website regarding the community of St. Jones Within:

The origin of the name may never be fully understood. However, circa 1840 it was known as Jones' Harbour, possibly named after one or more of the Jones brothers from Trinity (Samuel, William and/or Stephen) who were overwintering here.

The "St." aspect of the name is without known explanation.

The "Within" is to distinguish it from the "Without"; St. Jones Without (referred to elsewhere as Outside) being 'out' nearer the bay, and St. Jones Within (Inside) being more 'in' (distant) from the bay.

The Decks Awash publication (Vol. 15, No. 6, Nov.-Dec. 1986) offered the following regarding St. Jones Within: Some people refer to the community as St. Jones, the name on the community road sign, and some as St. Jones Within, which is the name listed on the highway signs.

This is a reminder that there was also a community named St. Jones Without, situated on the south side of the Southport peninsula. The older residents who remember its existence are the ones who use the full name.

The dropping of the suffix used to cause problems for visitors, who often mistook St. Jones for St. John's and were quite upset to discover they had to return over the rough gravel road to reach their destination.
