St. David's: Located at the mouth of the Crabbes River, St. David's at one point was called Crabbes West. How the Crabbes River got its name, remains, at least to the author, a mystery.
The community at one point was also known as South Barrisway and as First Barrisway. According to ENL contributors, there were three "mouths" in the area, collectively the three were known as the Barrisways. Why? most likely just a different spelling for a "barachois" or a "barasway", which typically refers to a sandbar.
Who, when or why the town was eventually named after St. David, the patron saint of Wales, is unknown.
