Newfoundland Tourism Region : Western
Shoal Cove East and Shoal Cove West: Located near to each other, interestingly the two Shoal Coves are actually not side by side. Shoal Cove East (the smaller of the two, with a population of 25 is only 6 km (3.7 mi) northeast from Flower's Cove, whereas Shoal Cove West (Pop. 140) is further south, on the southwest side of St. Margaret's Bay.
According to "Bob" of Bob's Newfoundland website, Shoal Cove West is a "hidden gem". He described it as an area of shallow water where fish (especially cod) and bait-fish frequent (an apt description of a "shoal").
It is probably safe to assume that both communities were so named because of shoals in the area.
