Even though this is not a very big bay compared to many, Port au Port Bay, which is formed by the long narrow point of land on the tip of the Port au Port Peninsula to the west, and the mainland to the east, was not "overlooked" by Cook and Lane, nor its two smaller bays at the head, West Bay and East Bay.
The major landmark here is the actual Peninsula, and the history behind its name, and the name of the bay will be covered in the section on Peninsulas, as will be the various towns that dot the coast around the bay.
