Just south of the town of Placentia, Pointe Verde (Green Point) was probably settled after the establishment of Placentia to the north (circa 1660) which was the seat of the French colonial administration.

According to ENL sources, "by 1687 some 40 French families and a total population of about 1000 persons were residing in about 15 settlements spread from Trepassey westward along the south coast to Hermitage.

Settlements included Pointe Verde, Petite Plaisance, Petit Paradis, Audierne, Mortier, Burin, Petit and Grand Saint-Laurent, Miquelon, Ile Saint-Pierre, Grand Bank, Fortune, Cape Negre, Colinet and Sainte-Marie.

Plaisance, the largest of the French settlements, was only a small community and by 1698 still had only 29 families, a few of whom were born and raised there".

It is not known whether the community was named after the "fine grasslands" that surround the stony beach, or the first settlers John and Robert Greene) who moved there in 1803.

According to Wikipedia contributors, "The Greenes fished and cleared tuckamore to create extensive gardens and pastureland for their livestock.

By the time of the first census in 1836, the community had a population of seventy-two" According to the DNLE, tuckamore are "small stunted evergreen tree with gnarled spreading roots, forming closely matted ground-cover on the barrens".
