Point au Mal: Located on the cast side of Port au Port Bay, the community is at the base of Table Mountain along a flat, narrow coastal plain.
While settled originally by an Englishman in the late 1800s by the name of Joseph Lee, Point au Mal or "Bad Point" was obviously named by French fishermen that frequented the area.
While there are no direct references maritime disasters in the area (e.g., shipwrecks, etc.), according to ENL contributors, the name comes from the fact that there are few possibilities for ships to take shelter in the area, partly due to a shallow lagoon, known as Two Gut Pond, which cannot accommodate vessels due to its lack of depth.
