Petries: Located on the western side of the island close to Comer Brook, the Petrie family, in particular Alexander Petrie, a herring fisherman from Nova Scotia, settled in the Bay of Islands area as early as 1872.
Petries Point as it was known then, jutted out into the Bay, and when the railway came through in the 1890s, two of his relatives built a hotel and the "new" community became known as Petrics Crossing.
According to the ENL, Petries last appears separately in the Census in 1945, when there was a population of 658; it is now part of Comer Brook even though it still remains on the map as a separate entity.
