Mobile: Located only a few kilometers from Widess Bay, this settlement's earlier name may be quite odd, unless yumble or ou know a bit about the habits of the early fishermen.
Local lore suggests that it was known as Moveable Bay, most likely in reference to the migratory fishermen who "moved" from bay to bay to fish as well as to find shelter in which to build their necessary stages, etc.
According to material written in the ENL there is, however, a totally different derivation of the name Mobile. On early maps dating as far back to the 1600s, there were several variations of the name, include Momables, Mummable and Mumemobles.
It is suggested that "these terms may refer to the English dialect words mumble or momble (descriptive of turbulent seas), or may simply be a transfer from The Mumbles, a rugged Welsh peninsula".
