BAKEAPPLE BAY:
Not far from Mistaken Point on the southern tip of the Avalon Peninsula, the actual bay is of little "significance" except for its name.
It does not appear on the Cook and Lane Charts, however "Mistaken Points" does.
There is not a person who has visited Newfoundland and wondered at the jars of "Bakeapple Preserves" for sale at the side of the road.
Bakeapples, also known as the cloudberry, is a native plant grown in parts of the Province. An excellent source of Vitamin C it is best known for its taste - it actually has a very distinctive "apple-like" flavour.
In Finland a liqueur is made out of bakcapples, but such an industry has not started (yet) in Newfoundland.
It is believed that the name came from a French Explorer who upon seeing a patch of the odd looking golden-orange berries, asked what they were called.
French for "berry" is baie and "to call" is appeler and put together, the word was created. The bakeapple berry thrives in coastal regions where damp air and mild weather tend to favour it.
