Millville: At the mouth of the Grand Codroy River, Millville was founded in 1893 by Alexander Gale, moved there to establish a carding mill near Grand Daddy Brook. Eventually over time, he set up several other mills in the area.
The Scottish farmers in the area, had by this time started to raise sheep which produced a high-quality wool and the millers in the area became known for producing a "Harris-type tweed" of excellent quality.
At one point there were 16 machines in operation, running 24 hours a day. They produced as much as 500 pounds of wool per day. Mr. Gale and his eight sons all ran the mill at one time until it was closed in 1975.
At one-point Mr. Gale also operated a small grocery store where goods were bought on a "bartering system" common in that era.
The first post office was set up in the store and ran for more than 50 years, until it
was "replaced" by a mailbox delivery system was developed.
Tourists can visit the mill and learn about the carding process.
