MERASHEEN ISLAND:
One of the biggest "Canadian" islands is Merasheen Island, in the Placentia Bay.
It is approximately 35 km (21.7 mi) long and at its widest point it is 9 km (5.5 mi). At its narrow end, however it is probably more like 1 km (.6 mi) maximum.
The town of Merasheen was on the southwestern tip, and according to information presented in Wikipedia, it was one of the largest and most prosperous communities in Placentia Bay to be resettled, with the provincial government paying residents to abandon the community and relocate to designated growth centres during the 1960s.
Nearby Woody Island has also been resettled, however, the island has "preserved much of its original heritage" and Woody Island Resort "offers a vacation destination like no other, and plays host to many Newfoundland traditions such as the iconic kitchen party, sing-a-longs with local musicians, traditional Newfoundland home cooked meals with toutons [fried bread often served with molasses], fried cod and fresh homemade bread".
