Manuels: In material presented in the ENL from various sources, it is suggested that there three possibilities for the derivation of the town's name.
First is
that is a "corruption" of the term "man o' war"', a type of armed warship from the 16th onward, that was used by the British Navy for combat, as opposed to merchant service, with specific reference to a sailor who might of deserted the ship and "took refuge" in the area;
second, that the Portuguese explorer, Gaspar Corte-Real named the nearby river, Manuels River, after his patron, King Manuel of Portugal; and, third, and likely
most "likely" according to the authors, is that it was named after early settlers by the name of Manuel, as that family name is "associated" with Lower Island Cove.
