Newfoundland Tourism Region : Avalon
Lance Cove: Located on Conception Bay, north of Holyrood, the lance of Lance Cove does not refer to a long weapon used in joisting. Interestingly it has a totally different meaning, but that should not be surprising as the more one reads about Newfoundland, the more one discovers new words.
Such is the case of a "lance". From the DNLE:
Lance n also lant(s), launce - A small, elongate fish, used as bait; sand eel, sand lance (Ammodytes hexapterus, A. dubius); also in place-names of shelving, sandy coves frequented by the fish.
While it is probable that the cove is named after the animal described above, there has been a suggestion that "lance" could be an anglicization of "L'Anse" (cove) making it "Cove Cove". But somehow that doesn't seem right!
