Lady Cove: The term "Lady" does not refer to the "female person" one typically would think of.
Nor as is the case of Lord's Cove which as reported earlier was named after the Harlequin Duck (as in "Lords and Ladies"), research into Lady Cove shows a totally different provenance.
In this case, it is believed that Lady Cove appeared in early nautical charts as "Lally Cove", most likely getting its name from a "lolly", a Newfoundland term for a slab of "slob ice", aka a "lolly".
A lolly, according to the DNLE, is "soft ice forming in water or loose ice or snow floating in water". It was settled in the earl 1850s by winter people of Old Perlican.
