Knight's Cove: Located at the head of the western arm of Blackhead Bay, little information was found for Knight's Cove.
According to the ENL sources, it is known that in the mid-1700s that Irish Roman Catholic migration, from Bonavista, west was the "reason" why folks settled in places like Keels, Plate Cove, Stock Cove, Broad Cove, Duntara, Open Hall, Red Cliff, Knight's Cove and King's Cove, especially because "the cod fishery was the economic base and the poor soils of the northern part of the Bonavista Peninsula created a heavy dependence on the supply centres of Trinity and Bonavista".
The choice of the name is disputed by some. According to Wikipedia contributors, there are two plausible theories behind the
name:
Knight's Cove was established as a Church of England and Roman Catholic community sometime before 1836, and may have been named after Reverend Richard Knight, D.D. (1788-1860), a much-loved resident of Bonavista in the early nineteenth century.
There is also a local tradition that ascribes the name to a corruption of 'Night's Cove'. According to that tradition, merchants doing business in nearby Stock Cove found Knight's Cove more attractive for a night's stopover".
