Jeffrey's: Another community that has undergone a couple of renames is Jeffrey's.
Originally when it was settled in the early 1800s it was called Bear Cove but there were so many similar names (Bear Cove, Bear Point, etc.) that it was changed in 1891 to Crabbes East (like Crabbes West it is on the Crabbes River).
But there were problems with the two towns being mistaken for the other, that it was, in 1911 changed to Jeffrey Crossing, after Charles Jeffrey, a Church of England Clergyman whose territory included that the Codroy Valley.
Eventually the "Crossing" was dropped when the Newfoundland Railway ceased to function, and "crossings" became irrelevant and the town simply became known as Jeffrey's.
