19 OLD BONNE BAY RD |
Newfoundland Tourism Region : Western
Bottomless Pond: Located in the western part of the island of Newfoundland, near the community of Deer Lake, this pond has a rather odd name.
Named because it appears it does not have any visible streams or rivers flowing out of it, however, it is believed, by the locals, that the lake has some type of "hole" in the limestone bottom.
The "hole" has always functioned to keep the water level constant, that is until the spring of 2019.
Since then, the water has risen approximately 20 metres, increasing the surface area by about fifty per cent.
Five cabins and two converted school buses that lined the lake have been "carried away" by the water. (Macdonald, 2019).
Nobody has come up with a viable solution to unplugging the drain - yet - and only the future will tell how high the water will rise.
There are a number of populated areas that have the word "pond" in their place name - - however, none of them are major population centres.
