Horse Islands, A0K 2M0

Newfoundland Tourism Region : Central

Located off the tip of the Baie Verte Peninsula, unlike Assateague Islands off the Maryland/Virginia coast, and Wild Horse Island in Montana, there never were any horses on Horse Islands, NL. According to Folklorist, P.K. Devine, and cited by Hamilton, the horses are a "reference to poetic illusion to the white rolling waves that dash on the island in a storm". Sometimes referred to as the St. Barbe Islands, the islands were the scene of an horrific accident that occurred during the filming of a Paramount Pictures film, The Viking. On March 15, 1931 there was an explosion in the stern of the S.S. Viking, killing the director, Varick Frissell and 26 other men. Some survivors were able to reach the Horse Islands through the icy waters, others were rescued by other vessels that were sent out to look for survivors.
