Hopeall: Continuing north one comes to Hopeall, a community which, according to information contained in the ENL entry, forms "a semi-circle around the bottom of Hopeall Bay, which is located between Green's Harbour and New Harbour on the southeast coast of Trinity Bay."
The provenance of the town's name is interesting. Originally the headland around the bay was referred to as "Hope-all-Head" as far back as 1775 by the surveyor, Michael Lane. Later James Imray, also a surveyor referred to is as Hope-all-a-Head.
According to Seary (1971, cited in the ENL) the name of the Head may have been derived from the British family name, Hopewell, however "no such family was recorded as living in the community in Lovell's Newfoundland Directory of 1871, shortly after the community was settled".
While it is not known exactly when the community was first settled, history suggests that "the first settlers came from older Newfoundland communities".
Hopeall first appears in the Census of 1869 at which point thirty-three residents were enumerated.
