Located south of Terrenceville, according to Collins Dictionary translated from French, mille has multiple meanings: it can mean a "thousand", as in mille euros (a thousand euros), a "mile", as in mille marin (nautical mile) or a "bull's eye", as in mettre dans le mille (to hit the bull's-eye; (figurative) to hit the nail on the head).
However, information from ENL sources does not suggest that any of these meanings are the basis for the name of this town.
Rather, it is reported that the town it has gone by many names, including Mille Harbour, Mulier Harbour, Millee Harbour and Harbour Millais.
H.W. Le Messurier, (1916) posited that the harbour was known locally as "Millay" Harbour and he suggested that the nearby cape, cove and harbour, could all be named after either a place name in Jersey or a family name, "Millais".
In 2010, Harbour Mille was in the news as a result of the sighting of a couple of "UFOs" (CBC News).
The report stated: "People who saw a missile-like object soaring through the sky over a small rural community in Newfoundland Monday night are getting no answers about what it was, although police say they'd gotten to the bottom of the mystery....
The photos taken by Stewart [a resident of Harbour Mille] show blurry pictures of what appears to be a long, round object, much like a missile, seemingly rising from the ocean, with either smoke or flames shooting out the back end...
"We confirmed that it was something," Sgt. Wayne Edgecombe told CBC News Wednesday. But Edgecombe said he couldn't reveal what the police investigation uncovered."
